Jude has all the power even though it is Carden on the throne. She had marvelous continuity between the novels and she had great consistency throughout. Similar to the first novel, the entire story is told from Jude’s perspective and the audiobook is once again narrated by Caitlin Kelly, who continues to do a fantastic job. Therefore, this review will contain information from the previous novel in order to address the reading of the second one.Īfter the coronation event from the first novel, we enter into a new reign with High King Carden and his “advisor” Jude Duarte by his side. The events in The Wicked King take place directly after the cliffhanger ending from The Cruel Prince. As this is the second novel is the continuous The Folk of the Air trilogy, it is highly recommended not to read them as a standalone and, instead, read them in order.

Gay and lesbian owned businesses sometimes criticized Sproul and Puechl for allowing straight professionals to advertise. The response in the beginning was intense and often polarized. (RWN) was launched in September of 2000. As Puechl and Sproul worked diligently to complete the website, begin marketing and approach businesses for sales they soon realized how big the potential of this business venture was. Couples could browse from the convenience of their homes to find photographers, caterers, honeymoon resources, real estate agents, lawyers and more. They envisioned the website to be a directory where progressive wedding professionals could reach out and advertise their services directly to gay and lesbian couples, their family and friends. Puechl and Sproul wanted to create the first online wedding registry for same-sex couples,. This personal experience led to an idea that was previously unheard of. The risk of being rejected due to discrimination or condemnation was always present and it made both women realize how difficult it was to focus on the joy of the occasion when so much discomfort went into the planning. The issue of "gay marriage" was barely on the radar for most Americans and many wedding professionals had never heard of two women getting married. In 1999 Cindy Sproul and Marianne Puechl were in the midst of planning their own commitment ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia. She's convinced her investigation will make Rachel so proud. Throughout the book, I was forced to revise my opinions once or twice about what was really going on. Before long, it starts to become obvious that Jean is using John as a scapegoat Jean’s family and business are both in a mess and he wants someone else to have to deal with them. Naturally, they expect him to continue running the family glass-making business and arranging shooting parties – things that John has absolutely no experience in. When Jean’s chauffeur arrives at the hotel, John is unable to convince him of what has happened – and ends up accompanying the chauffeur to Jean de Gue’s chateau, where the Frenchman’s unsuspecting family assume that he really is Jean de Gue. John agrees to go for a drink with Jean but falls into a drunken stupor and wakes up in a hotel room to find that Jean has disappeared, taking John’s clothes and identity documents with him! What would you do if you came face to face with yourself? That’s what happens to John, an Englishman on holiday in France, when he meets his exact double – a Frenchman called Jean de Gue. Having escaped a diabolical place of immoral experimentation and callous, horrific abuse where his only usefulness is as a test subject for his ability to manipulate gravity, Jes finds himself on the pleasure moon of Persephone-9, a place so utterly different to his old life that he can scarcely believe his driving plan to find sanctuary of any kind has yielded such blissfully good results. Whatever comes after that is the subject of improvisation and desperation, and if it’s a good thing, something that changes your life, well that is the luxuriant icing on a cake you’re happy to be eating wherever you find yourself. Escaping from a dark and terrible situation usually demands one thing, and one thing only – just get the hell away! These butterflies become the center of Flight Behavior, their fight for survival mirroring that of Dellarobia’s. Only a mile away from the rendezvous, she’s stopped short by the sight of what she thinks to be an act of God: the fiery and overwhelming presence of millions of monarch butterflies coating the trees and swirling through the air. Dellarobia’s misery and boredom drive her into the arms of adultery with a telephone repairman. As the novel grapples with highly controversial and important issues such as progress and its resulting casualties, the novel ultimately leaves readers with a question: “What is the use of staying in a world that has no soul?”įlight Behavior follows Dellarobia Turnbow, a poor farmwife seemingly cursed to a life of monotonous motherhood that is only interrupted by her controlling in-laws. Though the novel has its flaws, particularly with an uncomfortably slow and dense beginning, it eventually grows to be as beautiful, thought-provoking and complex as the monarch butterfly, the catalyst of its action. Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel Flight Behavior wrestles with change and progress both on a small and large scale.
