Our reality, our 2016, is a mistake of epic proportions. Stevens has a 5 star book in him, had he been a little braver in his convictions then this might have been it. He deals with the horror in a matter of fact, sterile voice which skates over the emotion a little. Here you feel like you're watching the scenes from the sidelines while someone describes them to you, rather than being put in the place yourself. What this writer doesn't do (for me,at least) is go for the jugular and actually put you in the position for the themes he's addressing this is needed to truly understand the position the character is in. The situations he describes are easily imagined and the characters are ones that you could identify with. Stevens writes in a very engaging style which keeps the pages turning and the pace is kept really well. The themes are hard to swallow, dealing with rape, torture and humiliation but I don't feel they were gratuitous in any way.in fact I would have liked the really hard hitting scenes to hit harder and truly disturb. Here, Mr.Stevens introduces us to a rather horrific, not too distant future where women are hideously repressed and all men are b*******. The rear cover calls it "Hunger Games meets Fifty Shades" but really, that's not what I found inside. This is a curious one to review for me as I'm not sure really what to make of it. 2013 saw the premiere of the opera ‘Dorian Grey’ at the Slovakia National Theatre Pullinger wrote the libretto.
